Pig iron is an iron-carbon alloy with a carbon content greater than 2%. Industrial pig iron generally has a carbon content of 2.5%-4% and also contains elements such as C, Si, Mn, S and P. It is the product of smelting iron ore in a blast furnace. Depending on the form in which carbon exists in the pig iron, it can be further divided into steelmaking pig iron, foundry pig iron and ductile iron.

It is a cast iron in which the precipitated graphite is spherical. Because spheroidal graphite cuts the metal matrix less than flake graphite, the strength of the cast iron reaches 70-90% of the matrix structure's strength, with a tensile strength of up to 120 kgf/mm², and it also has good toughness. Apart from iron, the chemical composition of ductile iron is generally: carbon content 3.6-3.8%, silicon content 2.0-3.0%, total manganese, phosphorus and sulfur not exceeding 1.5%, plus an appropriate amount of rare earth, magnesium and other spheroidizing agents.
